printer software disappeared and won't reload

When I first installed this printer, I set it up to be wireless. Some time after that, I couldn't get it to print, so I reinstalled it, When I reinstalled it, it would not install as a wireless, so I went ahead and set it up to be wired with a USB cable to the PC. Today when I went to scan, I first noticed there was no printer icon in the start bar. Then when I went to "All Programs", HP was nowhere to be found. I went to the control panel, and the HP printer was in Printers, but it was not the default. I set it to be the default printer. Then I went to the menu on the printer itself and tried to connect to the computer. It started to connect but then stopped saying it could not connect due to a hardware issue. It suggested I remove any paper jams, but there were none. I went and found an icon labeled “troubleshoot HP installation" on74 my desktop. It only showed trouble shooting a wireless connection, and when I printed a wireless report, it stated that the printer was connected and the wireless was on. So I thought I'd go ahead and try to set it up with a wireless connection again. I went through the trouble shooting steps which consisted of unplugging the printer and the router, waiting 30 seconds, then plugging them in and restarting the computer. The next step was to go to "ALL Programs>HP>(PrinterName)>Printer Set up and Software or Connect a New Printer. But there still is no HP software listed in my "ALL Programs" For the time being, I cannot find the installation disk that came with the printer. I am using Windows XP.

I really need to be able to scan. This is my umpteenth printer, and I have only had it for 7 months. I don't want to have to go buy yet another printer. I have never had a printer work long enough to be able to replace the ink cartridge more that twice. And it is always something like this. My last two printers, a Kodak and A Canon both began insisting they could not work until a paper jam was cleared; only there was no paper jam. We put a man on the moon, why can't a printer last me at least until it is out of warrantee.
